Guardian Scholars

The application process is now closed.  Applications for the 2011-2012 academic year will be available in January, 2011.

The Guardian Scholars Program
is a nationally-recognized program that provides financial assistance to former foster youth to help support their efforts to obtain a university, community college or vocational school education.

The program provides students with up to $5,000 to help cover costs not typically covered by financial aid such as rent assistance, clothing, transportation, and application fees. Additional services include housing assistance, financial aid application assistance, life-skills coaching, post graduate career planning, and mentoring.

In San Diego County, approximately 300 children ‘age out’ of the foster system each year. Only 10% of foster youth attend college and, of this 10%, only 3% will actually graduate. Promises2Kids has provided critical mentorship, life skills training and monetary support for emancipated foster youth since 2001 with outcomes that far surpass national averages for foster youth.

In 2008, the Guardian Scholars Program offered scholarships to 45 former foster youth.  During this same year, all eligible seniors graduated - six with a four-year Bachelor’s degree and one with a Masters-level graduate teaching credential.

Promises2Kids Guardian Scholars provides qualifying students with:

  • $3,500 or $5,000 in financial assistance
  • Assistance with college admissions
  • New-student orientation
  • Academic advising
  • Employment assistance
  • Access to affordable housing
  • Mentoring opportunities
  • Life-skills coaching
  • Post-graduation career planning and assistance

Youth in the Guardian Scholars Program often call Guardian Scholars mentors at Promises2Kids.  Some call to check in.  Others call because they need a chair or a desk.  Still others call because they need to hear the voice of a caring, supportive adult. Whatever the reason for the call, there is always a need and, with your support, we will be there for every call. Foster children deserve access to education and the chance for a better life.
